We built an app for everyone in Madurai

By Sara · · 4 min read

Madurai’s news is everywhere and nowhere. It is in the morning paper, on the TV channels, in district notices on a government website, and in WhatsApp forwards about tonight’s power cut. And when the street light outside your house stops working, the number to call is somewhere nobody can find. King of Madurai puts all of it in one free app, in Tamil and English.

King of Madurai's Madurai now screen in Tamil, with weather, official notices and headlines

Madurai now, in Tamil: the weather, official district notices, and the day’s headlines by topic.

The listings, names and report counts in these screenshots are samples.

What is inside

  • Madurai’s news in Tamil and English, plus the evening roundup, மதுரை இன்று. Every headline shows who published it and links to the original report, and official and verified items are labelled, so you always know where something came from.
  • Official district notices, announcements and tenders, alongside the current city weather from the India Meteorological Department.
  • Civic help: where to complain about garbage, street lights, drains, water and more, with the right numbers and links, your ward and councillor — and a complaint letter the app writes for you, in Tamil or English.
  • A power or water cut? Report it for your area with one tap, and see how many of your neighbours already have.
  • Classifieds to buy, sell or rent in Madurai. Post with photos; every listing is checked before it goes live.
  • Saved collections for the things you want to keep — a guide for visiting family, emergency numbers, plans for the weekend.

The complaint letter writes itself.

Most people know the street light is broken. Far fewer know who to tell, or how to put it in writing so it is taken seriously. King of Madurai finds your ward and your councillor, gives you the right number and link, and drafts the letter in Tamil or English. All that is left is to send it.

Where every item comes from

A city app is only useful if you can trust it, so King of Madurai never hides where something came from. Each headline carries the name of its publisher and a link to the original report, and official items are labelled as official. Classifieds are checked before they go live.

Free, with nothing to sell you

There are no ads, no subscriptions and no in-app purchases. It is free on the App Store for iPhone and on Google Play for Android, and it opens in Tamil, with English one tap away.

Why we build things like this

Digitalgrub is a Madurai company, so this one is close to home. But the habits behind it are the ones we bring to every client: gather what is scattered, check it before it reaches anyone, say plainly where it came from, and make the next step a single tap. If your business has information spread across registers, phones and WhatsApp groups, that is a conversation worth having.

Get it

King of Madurai is free on the App Store and Google Play. There is also a small website at madurai.digitalgrub.in, and the rest of what we build is on the apps page.
